We became the best of friends. We are like love birds that can never be torn apart. We are like a flower and a bee that always come together. I, the flower, that gives hope help you survive and you, the bee, that makes my life meaningful and worth living.

But then you have to go. You have to work abroad. How ironic is your timing?

We almost spent everyday together and now you’re leaving. I knew that I will not be used to not seeing you. But I don’t want you to keep for myself. You are a hungry bird that must fly to reach the heaven.

So I let you go.

I bid you goodbye and prayed to our Lord that your paintings will be famous all over your dreamland.

I have seen most of your artworks. More than half of them are composed of different pictures of your lovely wife. You’ve always told me, “She is my one true miracle.” You have filled your paintbrush with your fervors of love, creating magic on your plates.

The night before you were gone, you phoned me. You said, “I am not only happy and also sad - happy because I could show my miracle all over Europe and sad because I will be missing you.”

You don’t know how much lonelier I am, but I held my emotions tightly. Before you hung up, I sang to you the same song I have done the first time we met-

“…I am afraid if I lost you,
I’d fall through the cracks and lose my tracks
In this crazy lonely world…”

2001

You came back! At a midnight of September, when the moon was full and bright, you surprised me. You remembered that I always sleep at two in the morning so you decided to visit me at the most unexpected time.

At that time, you gave me your most wonderful gift- your love. You played the same song I always sang to you on your radio. We danced under the moon whose light is shining so vivid upon us. We dance like no one is watching except she- the mother moon- who gave her title to me as goddess of the night. And I feel like a real goddess holding you so close to me while listening to the lyrics-

“…Now here you are with midnight closing in
You take my hand as our shadows dance
With moonlight on your skin
I look in your eyes
I’m lost inside your kiss
I think if I’ve never met you
About all the things I’ve missed…”
You gave me a rose with petals that are of perfect crimson like the lipstick color I mostly use. Crimson reminded him of my lips that he wanted to kiss.

I told you “I love you. I need you here beside me. If you want to, I will be your strength, your loyal companion, your lover, until forever, if forever comes.”

And after that, we both gave ourselves to one another.

2002

You continued to paint but you never made a portrait of me. You drew images about nature, heaven, angels, saints and your miracle – your dead wife.

I was jealous.

I hanged all the pictures of your wife at the end of the dark hallway, where no enough light could give glow to its splendor. Once I teased you that you think I’m ugly and never picturesque yet you just laughed and told me I was being silly.

I was hurt so I didn’t talk to you much. Then you gave me a flower called marigold with golden-yellow flowers. You said it reminded you of my hair because they are of the same color.

I just smiled.

Each time you painted, I was hurt more because I knew I would never have my face in your canvas. So I never watched what you were painting everyday.

But every finished art you’ve had, you turned to me and told me that you love me and I should never forget that. Just by hearing your voice saying those three words and all the hurt transformed into love. So I sat near you, and I was stitching, writing or singing the same old song while you were painting –

2003

I never thought that you were interested in planting. You filled the once bald garden with a variety of flowers, mostly fleshy white jasmines that look like the color of my skin, marigolds and roses. It was pretty for they were many of them in the garden but it looks quite funny because of its odd alignment.

While I was busy with my cooking one morning, I heard a loud crash.

I went into your room and I saw you sitting with your arms folded and your head facing downwards. Many of your bottles and cans of paint fell into the floor but you don’t seem to mind.

Many days passed and you seem to be in a different world. You were always queer, speechless, childlike and thinking of things that are not really there. In spite of this, your paintings were still good even if you already have problems distinguishing colors. Every night, you get up from bed and sneaked into the garden to take care of your plants. I did not follow you for I was afraid of what you’ve become, yet I have always waited until you came back.

One night was the most terrifying and hurting night for me, when you came back from the garden and you sat on the bed beside me. I was going to hug you but before I could do it, you looked at me in a strange way, pointed me with your finger and said, “Who are you?”

I am the one who is supposed to ask you that.

I was hurt. I was afraid. I sacrificed my dreams just to be with you and this is what I got. I cried and cried every night. But I swore that I will never leave you and I still believe that someday, al this would end.

2004

You were sick and everyday I took care of you. I watched every move that you do. I was like your shadow, always there but unnoticed. You can’t do anything right except painting and planting.

My heart was so drenched with pain but I did not want to think of my feelings for I must prioritize you. I have faith in you that you will be free from your sickness and we will live happily again. I tried not to feel the pain every night for you’ve always asked me who I am.

I prayed that you will remember me, that you will remember our love and our dreams together.

I sang to you our love song just like a mother singing a lullaby to her beloved child, hoping that it would help you in remembering me –

“…You are the love of my life
And I’m so glad you found me
You are the love of my life
Baby put your arms around me…”
2005

Still no improvement. Each day was the same. But I never gave up and I will never give up until you remember me. I kept singing to you every night, I kept telling you “I love you” every hour. I became your servant, your maid, for you can’t live on your own. The doctors say that I should take you to the hospital so they could cure you but I didn’t believe them.

The only cure that will bring you back to normal is to remember our love.

All you could ever say to me are “love song” “paintings”, and “flowers”.

At some point, I hated you for I thought our love could overpower your illness but instead, all you could think of were your paintings and your flowers.

I was so hurt that I thought of leaving you alone but I can’t. I was more sympathetic than hurt whenever I saw you and I still hoped that you would remember me.

when you finally find something real…”

2006

We’ve ran out of money so I had to sell some of your paintings for your medicine. The frames of your paintings were already rusty so I decided to change them. As I unlocked the frame and removed its back part, I took the painting. Suddenly, I felt that I was holding two paintings in my hand. The piece in the front was the portrait of your wife. Then, I separated the two pieces together and I hold the other piece.

I was shocked by what I saw.

I did the same to the other framed paintings and all of them… all of them have a portrait of me on the back.

I didn’t know then what I should feel. I didn’t know if I should be grateful or mad. I was so confused because you didn’t tell me anything about this and why did you hid my portraits at the back of each painting.

I took one portrait of me. In this picture, I was singing as I held a child in my arms. It was so beautiful. I hugged it like doll, carrying it like a treasure in my arms. I went to you as I was holding it. I put the painting in front of you. Suddenly, you noticed me. Then you smiled and said those three words I deeply longed to hear.

That night, you were your true self again. I was so happy even though I only felt the presence of your love for one night.

2007

The New Year brought a new tragedy to my life.

You accidentally drank poison that you thought was just water on a small bottle on New Year’s Eve. When I brought you to the hospital it was too late. You cannot breathe anymore. Your nervous system has stopped functioning.

You left me alone.

For a month, I was like a bat that hides on her dark and gloomy cave. I can’t accept what happened to me then. I was so depressed that I was nearly crazy. I wanted to die too so I could follow you.

I went to the porch one day during sunset. It was high above the ground and I could see the whole garden. It was so full of flowers. Just by watching them, I felt the urge to jump and land on them even though it will cause me injury. Pain was no more for me. It was always there, like a company that will not leave you. I was so used to it that I wasn’t even afraid of physical harm anymore.

I stared at the flowers for so long. For so long until I have noticed something I never recognized before. The odd alignment of flowers represents something I should have realized before.

The marigolds like the color of my hair, the crimson roses like the color of my lips, the blue hyacinths like the color of my eyes and the jasmines like the color of my face.

Their shape and their alignments resemble my face.

And I could clearly see it here in the porch, which is our most favorite place in the house.

I cried. I cried because of joy. I cried because of your great love for me.

And when the moon came and shone is light upon me once again, I felt your presence surrounding me. I closed my eyes and hummed our love song as I sensed your hand in mine.

A letter

To my Second Miracle,

I am sorry if I am a burden to you. My mind is really sick. The only times I am my true self are the times when you sang to me our song. So before I go to my crazy world again, I am now writing this letter to let you know something.

When I was still starting in my field, my paintings quickly became a success in my town. My inspiration then was my first love. The most famous paintings I had then were pictures of her. Instantly, she became famous too because many people were amazed by her natural beauty. Her glamour earned her a job to be a model. Many men adored her. And one day, a couple of policemen went to my place and reported that she was dead the night before. She was raped and abused by four drunken men.

I hope you understand why I placed your portraits on the back of the frames. Every time I tried to, her past kept haunting me. I was also afraid that it would happen twice and I was so afraid that I would lose you.

I dreamed that someday I will be gone and you will be left alone. But do not worry because I had left you a great gift to remember my love for you in our garden.

When the time came that my soul will fly away to the heaven, I will be with my first miracle again. I will tell her all about you and how great a person you are.

You are a very wonderful person. When I die, do not be sad. For there will also be a second love for you just like what happened to me. You are still young and beautiful and there will be a man who will be with you and cherish you for the rest of your life.

Remember that I love you and I thank you for all the things you have done to me.
